from Lisa Helen Carter, Evergreen, CO

Publisher: RECOGNIZED: The Magazine of Signature Value Creators™

Lisa H. Carter Recognition Symbol

The symbol of the luminescence that comes from the insights that originate in the perspective inherent in a RecognitionFirst Gift of a Feature Article for
RECOGNITION: The Magazine of Signature Value Creators — recognizing as much of the value that you have created, are creating, in the process of creating,
and planning to create in both personal and professional roles in your life —
as recognized as possible from the lens of Lisa H. Carter.

The RecognitionFirst
Gift Map

A value-first journey — from being seen, to being understood, to becoming easier to trust, refer, hire, support, and remember.

I believe some people create more value than the world has fully recognized. You may be one of them. I created RECOGNIZED to honor that value first — before any ask, before any pitch. What you hold in your hands is a map of what I am offering you, and why. Every step is a gift. Every next step is entirely yours to choose.

— Lisa H. Carter

Personal Blended Value

The RecognitionFirst Gift Map is rooted in my own extension of a concept that has shaped the way I understand value creation: Blended Value.

The original Blended Value concept was developed by Jed Emerson in the field of social impact investing. His work challenged the idea that value should be separated into financial value on one side and social or environmental value on the other. Instead, Blended Value recognizes that true value is integrated. Jed described it when I first read it as follows: Blended value is the unique, indivisible value created by an organization, as it pursues its mission, in the way that it benefits society, the economy, and/or the environment — its DNA.

Another way to think about it is that economic, social, and environmental value are often created together, through the same choices, work, relationships, investments, organizations, and missions. I just love the DNA concept because that is uniquely human in nature — and I am looking through the Lisa Lens at the value that humans create as part of their core set of values, especially ones of service to humanity, which includes care and consideration for the environment.

When I discovered this idea, back in 2007, it gave language to something I had already sensed for much of my life — an aspect of which I had written a paper about in law school about how companies should have to account, even if in non-financial terms in the footnotes to their financial statements, for any environmental impacts their conduct of business created, as the only fair way to account for the environmental capital they used to generate revenue for their endeavors.

Some people create value in many directions at once.

They create value in families, friendships, communities, businesses, professions, movements, ecosystems, creative work, healing work, leadership, service, advocacy, learning, legacy, and love. Their value may be economic, social, relational, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, practical, environmental, cultural, civic, or generational.

Direct.

Sometimes that value is direct.

Derivative,

because the value they create allows other people to create more value.

Generative,

because the value they create keeps multiplying long after the original act, relationship, idea, or contribution.

A Definition

I call this Personal Blended Value.

Personal Blended Value is my extension of Blended Value from organizations, capital, and impact investing into the life of a person. It is a way of recognizing the many forms of value a person creates as they pursue their personal and professional missions. It honors the fact that a person's contribution cannot always be measured by money, title, audience size, awards, public visibility, or conventional achievement.

Visible.

Some value is visible.

Quiet.

Some value is quiet.

Rippling.

Some value changes one life so deeply that the ripple effect becomes impossible to fully trace.

For RecognitionFirst, I am selecting people whose value I have personally experienced, whose value I have directly observed in the lives of others, whose value has been shared with me through trustworthy firsthand accounts, or whose value I have discovered through public research. This selection process is personal, thoughtful, and recognition-led.

I am looking for Signature Value-Creators: exceptional people who create meaningful value as they live, work, build, serve, lead, love, heal, teach, protect, imagine, advocate, or contribute.

RecognitionFirst is my way of offering one of my own forms of Personal Blended Value: the recognition of value-creation. It is the highest compliment I can give someone.

To recognize the value they create in the world.
To name it.
To reflect it back.
To help preserve it.

To help make it easier for others to understand, trust, remember, refer, support, hire, collaborate with, or simply appreciate them more fully.

This is also a passion project for me. It allows me to learn about many different people and the value they create in the world. It allows me to practice recognition as a gift. It allows me to honor people not only for what they have done, but for who they have become through the value they have created, are creating, and may still create.

Recognition is the first gift.

Personal Blended Value is the lens.

Signature Value-Creators are the people I am honored to recognize.

The Many Ways a
Life Creates Value

The pages you have just read are complete in themselves.
What follows is simply another gift, if it resonates with you.

Over many years, I found myself asking a simple question: How many different ways can a human being create value?

Every time I recognized one person's life, I discovered another form of value that deserved a name. Eventually, I realized there wasn't one answer. There were many.

The list that follows is not intended to be complete, perfect, academic, or authoritative. It is simply a collection of invitations.

Many people initially assume they are "not interesting enough" or "haven't accomplished enough" to be featured. Others feel bashful because value-creation has been woven so naturally into how they live, work, care, lead, serve, create, protect, teach, or contribute.

By scanning the many forms of value, they often recognize themselves in ways they had never considered before. That realization alone creates value.

As you read, you may discover forms of value you have created yourself. You may remember someone whose life changed yours. You may think of stories you had forgotten.

You do not need to read every entry.
Simply wander.
Notice what catches your attention.
Pause where your heart lingers.
That is enough.

The Galaxy of Recognized Value-Creation

The Galaxy of Recognized Value-Creation

The Many Ways a
Life Creates Value

Every star a story. Every trail of light a life still shaping the world. This is the galaxy of value that RecognitionFirst was born to see — luminous, boundless, and more beautiful than any one lens can fully hold.

This image was shaped with the help of AI — a heartfelt attempt to give form to the
Galaxy of Value-Creation that RecognitionFirst exists to recognize.

A Few of the Many Ways a Life Can Create Value

As you scan this list, please do not treat it as a checklist. You do not need to identify with every form of value. You do not need to prove anything. This is simply a field of recognition. Notice what feels familiar. Notice what surprises you. Notice what makes you think, "I had never realized that counted."
